Member Spotlight | Beki Zajac, iWIST Board Director

Beki Zajac, Technology Projects Supervisor at BC Transit

Are you a corporate or individual member?

 Corporate.

When did you join or learn about IWIST?

I joined iWIST in 2024. I had heard about iWIST several years prior but didn’t make it out to any events until my employer made corporate membership available. My first event was the 2024 AGM and I was impressed by the energy and commitment to furthering the future of women in STEM within the group.

Why does this organization matter to you and to the community?

iWIST’s work in encouraging women and girls to pursue STEM careers on the Island is important to me because I believe we need to increase women’s representation in these fields. I remember feeling out of place in my undergrad Computer Science classes before pursuing a Business degree instead. It all worked out in the end, but I want to help build a community where women don't question if they belong in technical fields.

What is your background in STEM?

I work as a Supervisor of Technology Projects, leading a team of project managers and business analysts to deliver technology projects.

On your own career journey how important was it to have/provide peer support? Why? –

I think peer support is hugely important. Looking back on my career, most of my big moves – applying for new roles or going back to school – were encouraged by someone in my network. It can be easy to doubt yourself and it is really helpful to have someone who can look at things objectively and support you to take a leap.

What do you see as an opportunity to support women in STEM?

I’m really excited to jump into organizing the Future Innovators event this year. I watched the 2025 event and can see how inspiring our members’ stories are and the impact they can have on young people still deciding what field of study to pursue.

What is the difference between IWIST and other sector-based associations?

What stands out to me is the cross-section of women in this organization. In other associations I’ve been part of, people are usually all in the same field and doing similar work. It’s amazing to see the wide range of careers and industries women are working in on the island.

What would you say if someone asked you about IWIST?

I would say to come and check out an event! The atmosphere is welcoming and fun and it’s a great opportunity to meet and learn from interesting people.

What was the most fun you had at an event?

I really enjoy the AGMs. Obviously it helps that they’re held in a castle, but they’re also a fun festive atmosphere with door prizes and carol singing.

Beki was voted onto the Board of Directors in December 2025, and will serve in that role for 2 years
