Island Women in Science and Technology (iWIST) was searching for a logo that represented its vibrant hub of accomplished peers and reflected a sense of community, as well as a safe and empowering space for women in STEM.

“I found inspiration one day in the spindle whorl, a Coast Salish tool traditionally used by Indigenous women to spin wool and knit fabrics. This was an empowering act for women, and their families and communities often relied on their skills and knowledge in order to prosper. I thought this was a proper fit and translation for iWIST and something we could explore through the design of the logo. In more contemporary spindle whorl artwork we see many repeating four-step patterns, so this is a motif I’ve carried over. Number groupings of fours I found fitting with the number of categories in STEM.”
