Science Literacy Week at Vancouver Island University Library

Code: Debugging the Gender Gap tells the history of how women originally dominated careers in computing science and profiles inspirational pioneers.  It then examines their consequent decline in the 1980s, questions the science’s lack of ethnic and gender diversity, and explores strategies for future change. Since coding has become ubiquitous in most 21st century disciplines, proponents recommend the acquisition of coding skills in all fields of study.

This film & talk event is hosted by Robyn Quinn, the Chair of Island Women in Science and Technology (iWIST), a passionate advocate about building diversity in the STEM sector. In this capacity, she’s launched many events, including a conference for women in STEM, Leading the Way, aimed at creating leadership opportunities for women who wish to build their networks and their own skills.

Wednesday September 13  6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (Victoria)

She Started It – Documentary screening at Fort Tectoria

The film follows five young women over two years as they pitch VCs, build teams, bring products to market, fail and start again.

Along the way, it weaves in big-picture perspectives from women like investor Joanne Wilson; White House CTO Megan Smith; GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling; and Ruchi Sanghvi, the first female engineer at Facebook. Help us inspire the next generation to dream bigger, and urge today’s generation to support women entrepreneurs. Sponsors: The Discovery Foundation, Purpose Five with thanks to VIATEC
